The Renewal Retreat

Let’s do a small exercise. Sit down. Maybe make yourself a cup of tea, coffee or if you’re like me, a cup of hot cocoa. The question for today is, what comes to your mind when you think of a retreat? Does going to the spa or time alone jump first at you? Maybe a spiritual retreat?

To me, I think of a special place or “sanctuary”, where you can “Relax. Refresh. Rejuvenate” and forget about your life’s problems. Where time stands still. A place that has activities or rituals, to help your body relax, facials to calm down and clear any impurities. A place people go to, seek solace and solitude.

To me, it’s also a spiritual retreat. I remember going with my primary school for a day out. We sat in a circle, spoke about how we feel, closed our eyes for meditation, reflections, prayed and took a visit to the chapel.

To the dictionary, the word “retreat”, is a noun that means a place you can go to be alone.

Too often, we seek renewal from entertainment, people, going to spas, retreats and forget about the true source of renewal. It’s like being thirsty, but going for fizzy drinks rather than water that would actually hydrate the body, whereas fizzy drinks would make dehydration worst.

With God, it is not essential to go on a 7-day retreat to experience Him or feel rejuvenated and relaxed. You won’t need, those hot stones on your back or mud baths to experience quietness and harmony. News Flash: You can experience this, every single day of your lives.

One of the best things about having a relationship with God, is that we can be renewed from the comfort of our own home, through His word. The Bible says;

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are
not consumed,
for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 NIV

Every morning, the Bible says, we can experience His compassion. We can thirst for Him every day and He will “daily load our benefits” (Psalm 68:19 KJV). The Bible encourages us, to thirst for Him daily, as what we prayed for yesterday, or the compassion we received yesterday, cannot run over for today. And what you received today won’t run over into tomorrow, because they are new every morning. In order for us to be full and run smoothly, we need Him daily. We need to experience Him daily. We need that ‘Renewal Retreat’ daily.

So how can I go on this ‘Renewal Retreat’?

Good question. You can spend as little as 5 minutes in the morning with God. To renew your mind, soul and absorb His overwhelming goodness and love.

2 Corinthians 4:16 speaks of how our outer-self wastes away, “yet our inner self is renewed day by day” AMP – just as how people go to spas to exfoliate the dead skin cells on their face, to help them feel renewed on the inside, so can we, by reading the Bible and meditating on His word, so our inner self can be renewed every day.

Prayer: O Lord, because of who you are, I pray that you help us to seek you earnestly each and every day because our soul thirsts for you and our flesh faints for you like a dry land, where there is no water. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
